Our History

On September 22, 2022 we are celebrating 83 years of “People Helping People.” For some, 83 years may not mean much. But to us, 83 years means everything. Since 1939, our goal has been a sincere desire to help each other by providing a quick economical source of confidential credit, and by promoting thrift through a convenient, systematic savings plan. We are incredibly thankful for our members, employees and community that has given us the opportunity to celebrate 83 years today. Keep reading to learn about some of our favorite accomplishments over the past 83 years as Fairmont Federal Credit Union.

In 1939, Fairmont Onized Federal Credit Union was organized to serve the employees of Owens-Illinois Glass Co. The original Board of Directors decided that loans were limited to one year and all borrowers were required to save at least $0.25 a month.

In the 1970s, the Credit Union opened membership to all residents of Fairmont, West Virginia.

In the 1980s, the Credit Union officially changes its name to Fairmont Federal Credit Union. The first ATM opens as well as 5 new branches. Membership is extended to include anyone working or living in Marion County.

In the 1990s, two additional branches open and Fairmont Federal Credit Union begins participating in the Partners in Education program, supporting elementary schools in the counties it serves.

In the 2000s, the Fairmont FCU Board of Directors votes to expand membership to anyone working or living in Monongalia, Harrison and Taylor counties. Three new branches were opened.

In the 2010s, Fairmont FCU starts participating in Mad City Money, a financial education simulation for local students. Employees create Robes for Recovery, a non-profit organization that provides treatment robes to breast cancer patients.

In 2015, the Gateway Connector corporate office opens as a full-service branch.

In the 2020s, Fairmont FCU expands membership to those who live, work, worship, volunteer, or go to school in, and businesses and other legal entities located within Marion, Monongalia, Preston, Harrison and Taylor counties.

Throughout the past 83 years, we have stayed true to our commitment of “People Helping People” and strive to continue that commitment for years to come.
