World Elder Abuse Awareness Day - Tips to Keep Your Loved Ones Safe

Every year on June 15th we observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This day aims to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation that older adults face all around the world. Financial scams and frauds are one of the most common forms of elder abuse, and we believe it is essential to take steps in increasing the awareness of these types of scams. Here are some tips on how to keep the elderly safe from financial scams and frauds:

Educate them about common scams: Elderly individuals can be vulnerable to financial scams because they may not be aware of the latest scams or how they work. Therefore, it's important to educate them about common scams, such as phishing, romance scams, and lottery scams. Let them know what to look out for, such as suspicious emails, phone calls, or texts. Fairmont FCU regularly posts information and tips on how to protect yourself from scams and fraud. Stay up to date and view more educational resources by clicking here.

Encourage them to be cautious with personal information: One of the most common ways that scammers obtain personal information is by pretending to be a trustworthy source or family member and ask for sensitive information. Elderly individuals should be wary of giving out personal information, such as social security numbers or bank account information. Fairmont Federal Credit Union will NEVER send an UNSOLICITED call, email, or text asking for important account information. Some scammers can spoof caller ID’s and trick your loved ones into thinking the call is legitimate.

Advise them to check their accounts regularly: Encourage elderly individuals to check their transactions and statements regularly for any unauthorized transactions. This can easily be monitored by the Fairmont FCU mobile app, online banking and e-statements. If they notice any suspicious activity, advise them to contact Fairmont Federal Credit Union immediately.

Stay connected with them: Isolation and loneliness can make elderly individuals more vulnerable to financial scams and frauds. Regularly check in with them and maintain an open line of communication. Encourage them to seek help and contact us if they suspect they have been a victim of a scam. Remember, Fairmont Federal Credit Union is always here to help!

Protecting the elderly from financial scams and frauds requires a combination of education, vigilance, and support. By taking these steps, we can help prevent elder abuse and ensure that our loved ones remain protected from scammers.
